Just how humans use lotion and oils to protect their skin year-round, your pooch needs the same attention paid to their skin, coat and especially paw pads. Ice, snow, sleet and cold temperatures all contribute to your dog’s paw cracking, so making sure to combat those paw stressors will help maintain your dog’s paws and keep them healthy year-round from puppy to senior. This all-natural and homemade paw balm is a soothing solution to make sure your fur baby can keep running and romping through the snow for months to come! Try making your first batch using the recipe below!
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 2 tablespoons beeswax
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
- 4-ounce glass bowl
- bamboo skewer
- 4-ounce wide mouth container and lid
Steps:
- Combine the beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil together in a 4-ounce glass bowl. Heat the bowl on high in 30 second intervals until all the ingredients are mostly melted. The beeswax will take the longest to melt. Stir with the bamboo skewer until the beeswax is completely melted.
- Add about 20 drops of your preferred essential oil. (Lavender is known to be anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal making it a multi-purpose addition!)
- Pour mixture into a wide-mouth glass jar or tin and let it cool until solidified.
Tips for Use: Because young, active dogs can be hard to keep still, simple dip your dog’s paws into your paw balm and rub in a circular motion to cover the entire paw.
