November is National Senior Pet Month! Although we know it’s hard to imagine your fur-baby as anything other than… well, a baby, it’s important to acknowledge the signs of aging in your dog to be sure you properly care for them through this stage of their life.
Here are some pro tips to help your senior dog live their BEST life:
- More frequent vet visits. Senior dogs have more health risks than younger dogs, and they may need different vaccinations as they age. Visiting the vet more frequently will help ensure that your pet is receiving the proper care they need!
- Diet change. Not only do senior dogs need to have their weight kept in mind, but they typically need food that is easier to digest and filled with certain nutrients. Talk to your veterinarian about senior dog food they’d recommend for your pup.
- Consider their environment. Be conscious of where your pet is spending their time, and what the effects of their activities may be as they continue to age. For example, senior dogs may need to spend more time indoors than younger pups, or they may need to have a new sleeping spot set up downstairs if their usual spot requires them to climb a long staircase.
- Maintain mobility. Age-appropriate exercise for your senior pup will keep them more agile and healthy as they age! Talk to your veterinarian about exercises they would recommend for your pup’s age, breed, and health.
