Indoor & Outdoor Rabbit Hutches

A good rabbit hutch, outdoor or indoor, gives your bunny a safe home base with room to rest, a cozy place to hide and protection from the weather. Win World, formerly Advantek, is the maker of the original Stilt House Rabbit Hutch, and our hutches are built for everyday rabbit life. Choose a raised cypress fir hutch with a nesting box, or a hutch with an attached wire run for 2 to 3 rabbits. Pair any hutch with an exercise pen so your rabbit has room to hop, play and stretch every day.

How to Choose the Right Rabbit Hutch

Start with space. The House Rabbit Society recommends a home base of at least 8 square feet for one rabbit, with more room for exercise. The Stilt House takes up about 25″ x 48″, or roughly 8 square feet. The White Picket Fence hutch comfortably houses 2 to 3 rabbits and adds an attached run.

Plan for daily exercise. Rabbits need several hours a day outside their enclosure to hop and explore. A hutch works best as a bedroom and home base, paired with a playpen or a bunny-proofed room. The Universal Pet Cage and the 6-Panel Indoor Pet Playpen both make easy exercise areas.

Think about where it will live. Indoor hutches keep rabbits close to the family and away from predators and temperature swings. If your hutch goes outside, choose a raised design with a solid roof. Place it in shade, away from wind, and bring your rabbit in during extreme heat or cold. Supervise outdoor time, because predators can get through fencing quickly.

Make cleaning easy. Look for a pull-out tray, like the one on the White Picket Fence hutch, and doors that open wide so you can reach every corner.

Rabbit Hutch FAQs

How big should a rabbit hutch be?
The House Rabbit Society recommends at least 8 square feet of home space for one rabbit, plus a larger area for daily exercise. Bigger rabbits, and pairs, need more room.

Can a rabbit hutch stay outside in winter?
Rabbit welfare groups recommend bringing rabbits indoors in extreme weather. If your rabbit spends time in an outdoor hutch, keep it raised off the ground, sheltered from wind and moisture, and filled with dry bedding. Check on your rabbit often in cold or hot weather.

What’s the difference between an indoor and an outdoor rabbit hutch?
Outdoor hutches are raised and built from weather-resistant materials. The Stilt House, for example, uses naturally rot-resistant cypress fir. Indoor hutches focus on easy cleaning and fitting into your home. Some, like the White Picket Fence hutch, work in either setting.

Do rabbits need a run?
Yes. Rabbits need several hours of exercise a day outside their sleeping area. An attached run, an exercise pen or a bunny-proofed room all work.

What should go inside a rabbit hutch?
Soft bedding, a litter box, fresh hay, a water bowl or bottle, and a hiding spot. A nesting box like the ones in our hutches works well as a hideaway. Avoid wire floors on their own, because wire can hurt a rabbit’s feet.
